My interest in this surname began because I was about to be married to one! Hence I decided to make a start on researching this name.

The Buckland's we descend from lived on a little island situated on the South of England, called the Isle of Wight.

  • So we have a puzzle to continue. James John Buckland being born in 1854 in the elusive London birthplace!! But his father is stated as being William. It would be great to find them on the 1861 Census but have no idea where they would be at that time. They may still be in London of course, and James John would be about 7 years old. 

 

  • Another avenue of research would be to look up in the Family Record Centre Indexes for the birth of a James John Buckland about 1854-1855. Nice William had given his son a middle name, that should help us.!!

Update: 01 July 2004

  • I have found James John Buckland Birth Index for Mar Qtr 1854 at Bermondsey. Hopefully will order the Birth Certificate. Also I have been lucky to have the help from My Genforum list on Surrey where I have obtained the baptism for James John Buckland on 05 Feb 1854 at St Paul's Parish Church, Bermondsey, address at that time: 29 Kings Place, Crosby Row, Bermondsey, parents: William/Maria BUCKLAND. They are not at Bermondsey in 1861, I suspect they are in Hampshire by that time.

Update 19th July 2004

  • I have been informed from My Genforum list on Surrey that the Census for 1851 for the same address as above ie 29 Kings Place, Crosby Row, Bermondsey shows a Jonathan and Eliza BUCKLAND living there at this time. I wonder if there is any connection between William Buckland and Jonathan Buckland. Perhaps they were brothers.

 

Update 4th October 2004 

  • Have at last attained the Birth Certifcate of James John Buckland b 17 January 1854 at 29 Kings Place, Bermondsey. Parents are William Buckland a Carpenter and Maria Buckland formerly Brewer. So this at last confirms the parents and birth address.

  • I have obtained the marriage index to William Buckland and Maria Brewer. The IGI states that they were married at Potterne in Wiltshire on 20 Jan 1851. But I believe that William was married before. William states from the IGI that his father was named James Buckland.

The children on this Census were the children from William's first marriage to Maria Buckland. Probably a cousin. She was the daughter of William Buckland and Sophia Brewer. They married on 22 Sep 1834 at Potterne Parish Church, Potterne in Wiltshire. Maria died in 1848 and William remarried to a Maria Brewer on 20 Jan 1851 at Potterne, Wiltshire.
