The Fieldgate Connection

This connection page is dedicated to the surname "FIELDGATE"

James FIELDGATE was baptized on 07 May 1843 at the local Parish church of St Michael's in Newhaven, Sussex, son of Thomas FIELDGATE and Maria MITCHENER.

He married Elizabeth Frances LEVETT on the 6th JUNE 1865 at St Michael's in Newhaven, Sussex, James's occupation was a Mariner.

Although both James and Elizabeth were baptized at the local parish church, they decided to bpatized their own children at the local Dissenter Chapel in Meeching Road in Newhaven, Sussex. They went on to have a large family of 13 children. Unfortunately not all of them survived. There were 2 siblings that died in their infancy.

Name:

Life Span:

1. James Fieldgate [b 1866-1929]
2. George Thomas Fieldgate [b 1868-1868] Died in Infancy
3. Joseph Fieldgate [b 1870-
4. Rosina Maria Fieldgate [b 1872-
5. Elizabeth Frances Fieldgate [b 1874-
6. John Fieldgate [b 1876-1876] Died in Infancy
7. Annie Louisa Fieldgate [b 1877-1941]
8. George William Fieldgate [b 1880-1880] Died in Infancy
9. Jack Edwin Fieldgate [b 1881-
10. Charles Levett Fieldgate [b 1882-
11. Henry Mitchener Fieldgate [b 1885-
12. Cordelia Victoria Jubilee Fieldgate [b 1887-1960]
13. Alice Williamson Fieldgate [b 1890-1955]

The last 4 children had family "surnames" as middle names. Apart from Cordelia, who was given the names of Victoria and Jubilee having been born in Queen Victoria's Jubilee year of 1887.

The other "surnames" were Levett taken after their mother's maiden name, Mitchener taken after their Paternal Grandmother's maiden name, and Williamson taken after their Maternal Grandmother's maiden name. It was common practise at this time to use "surnames" of the female lines, so that the name carried on, and was not forgotton.

The older members of the family were not at home on Census night. They were probably at sea, because they were all Mariners. Maria Fieldgate states that she was Master Mariner's wife of "Mer Lew". I suspect this was a ship's name.

Her husband Thomas Fieldgate and his 2 sons Thomas Jnr and James were all missing from the Census of 1861. Maria had her widowed elderly mother staying with her at this time. Her mother Harriet's maiden name was Funnell and she married John Mitchener in Newhaven, Sussex. Harriet was from a small village called Rodmell in the County of Sussex. Again the "surnames" being used in the next generation by James and Elizabeth Fieldgate.

Go to "The Funnell Connection" to read more on Funnell's.
