James married Anne -[565] [MRIN:193] before 1709.122

Marriage Notes: James father, Robert LEVETT [1656-1709] [559] left him Berwick Windmill, Alfriston, Sussex., as he was the eldest son. James took over as Miller and during his Tenancy another storm caused the mill to be blown down, in January 1735. James paid for the mill to be re-erected, and in 1742 his son William LEVETT [1722-1777] [IRN 566] was granted a 100 year lease on the half of acre of land on which the mill stood, by Sir Thomas DYKE of Waldron.
Local tradition says that Berwick Windmill was moved or rebuilt. On maps dated 1753 and 1779 the mill site is slightly different, put down to a map makers error
However, the lease of 1742 states that William was granted "one piece of land containing half an acre parcel of the hill commonly called Little HILL, lying near Wicklands in Alfriston, upon which there is lately one windmill errected and built at the cost of James LEVETT , the father of the said William ".
It does not say that the mill was a re-building, but suggests a new building, so perhaps the local tradition is correct.
William LEVETT [1722-1777][IRN 566] took over from his father as Miller.

Robert married Mary BUCKLAND -[561] [MRIN:192] on 25 May 1675 in KEN, Goudhurst.133

Marriage Notes: Robert's father, James LEVETT [1615-1680] [IRN 556] left him Berwick Windmill in Alfriston, Sussex., as it was not subject to the Custom of the Manor, it was left to his n Robert [1656-1709] [IRN 559]. Robert was the eldest son of James's second marriage. But on the condition that Robert permitted his mother to be a partner and to share in the profits of the mill, so long as she remained a widow.
Robert worked the mill from 1680 until his death in 1709. During which time it suffered the vicissitudes of the weather. On 26 Nov 1703 a terrific storm [akin to our hurricane in 1987] hit the south of England, causing extensive damage throughout the area. Salt laden winds caused the Downs to be so impregnated with salt, that the sheep refused to graze for a week afterwards.
It was also reported that "the miller of Berwick, three miles from the sea, whilst attempting with his man to secure his mill, was so washed with flashes of sea-water, which he represented as beating against them like the breaking of waves against the rocks, that they were forced to give over their attempt; and in consequence, the mill was considerably damaged."
Following Robert's death, his eldest son James LEVETT [1683-1765] [IRN 562] took over as miller.

Storm of 26th November 1703
"The storm happened on a Satruday, and a week after the grass of the Downs above Lewes was so salt, that the sheep would not feed upon it, until hunger compelled them to do so; and the Miller of Berwick, THREE MILES FROM THE SEA, while attempting with his man to secure his mill, was so washed with flashes of sea water, which he represented as beating against them like the breaking of waves against the rocks, that they were almost strangled therewith, and forced to give over their attempt; and in consequence, the mill was considerably damaged" Written by: Thomas R TURNER.

Eighth Generation (5th Great Grandparents)

128. James LEVETT-[556], son of William LEVETT -[554] and Ann REED -[555], was born in 1615, was baptised on 20 Aug 1615 in LEWES, All Saint's PC, SSX,138 died in 1680, at age 65, and was buried on 26 Jul 1680 in ALFRISTON, St Andrew's PC, SSX.139

General Notes: In 1642 he was mentioned iin the Alfriston "List of Contributors to the Relief of Irish Protestants", as contributing two shillings and nine pence.

About 1645 it seems that he and his first wife Philadelphia went to Willingdon, together with their two young children. Two more children were born to them, one of whom died, and Philadelphia died there too.

He married for a second time to Margaret GOODWYN at Willingdon, and James had his 5th child there.

By 1662 James and Margaret and their children were living in Alfriston, at Winton, where his last child was born. In the Hearth Tax for that year James is listed as having two hearths at Winton.

In the Alfriston Parish Vestry Book [ESRO Ref AMS 5567/1] James is listed as a Churchwarden in 1663 and 1664.
In 1667 and 1677 he signed as a witness to the Churchwarden's Accounts.
In 1679 he was nominated as a Surveyor, together with Thomas DAVIS, for the following year.
On 12 April 1680, just 4 months before he died, James was nominated as Overseer, together with Robert HAMLEN, and John WOOD.

Further evidence of birth for James's date of birth might be obtained, if information taken from the back of the Berwick Manor Court Book [ESRO Ref G/ACC 911] is noted:
At a court held 9 October 1633 the list of accounts and money collected shows a fine of three pence levied on:
"George READE guardian of James Levet...............
for not appearing at the said Court............"
Similar entries appear for 9 Oct 1634 and 26 Oct 1635.

At the court of 3 Nov 1636 James Levett's name appears below the list of Jurors, as having sworn fidelity. If then he was 21 and of age, this would give him a birth date of 1615. His guardian, George READE, was probably a member of his mother's family.

James appeared as a Juror, sworn under the homage of Berwick, at Courts of:
11 Oct 1637
16 Oct 1640 when he and Philadelphia were admitted land in Berwick
22 Oct 1643
There is then a gap of 14 years, which was when James lived in Willingdon.
He then reappeared at the Courts as Juror:
14 Apr 1657
03 Oct 1659
28 Oct 1662
28 Apr 1663
30 Jul 1663

The land listed in the Court Book for 16 Oct 1640 was:
"A cottage called "PINERS", with an orchard and croft of land beside it, and about an acre and one rod of land. The rent for this land was 4 shillings, one chicken, and 6 eggs per annum. And there was a 3 pence herding money, which would have been the contribution to pay the shepherd's wages"
There was also the Southern part of the barn and 8 acres of arable land, the annual rent for which was 5 shillings and 4 pence - 2 1/2 acres in Brookland Furlong, adjacent to the barn 1/2 acre and 1 acre in Brookland Furlong, next to the town of Alfriston.
1 acre Red Furlong
1 acre divided by the highway called Winton Street
2 half acres in Drove Furlong
1/2 acre in Harnenore
1/2 acre in Blackenacre Furlong
All this pass to the heir of James and Philadelphia, which was their youngest son, William.

When James died, his youngest son Richard [by his second wife], was only 15, and so Margaret was made his legal guardian. At 21 he would inherit land held for him - half a wist of land, with appurtenances, in Winton. [Does this include the northern part of the barn?]
James must have acquired this land after his second marriage.

James purchased Berwick Windmill of Sir Thomas NUTT. It stood on the Downs above Winton, and in the parish of Alfriston. In his will he says "lately of Sir Thomas NUTT", and left it to Robert, his elder son, by his second wife.

William was probably born at Berwick, Sussex, about 1580, but as the Parish registers do not survive, therefore cannot be proved.

His trade of a mason is mentioned in the Parish Register against his burial entry, as well as in his will. The barn mentioned in his will, may well be the barn that features in later years, when divided into northern and southern halves in the Berwick Manor Court Records.

In 1614 William Levett was a Churchwarden of Berwick, and signed the Bishop Transcripts, but whether it was this William or another who was a farmer, is not known.
